What is the City Of Things?

The City Of Things is a research project run by Swirrl and partners as part of the Technology Strategy Board’s Internet of Things Convergence programme.

Our project is looking at the application of the Internet of Things to management of the urban built environment, making cities more efficient, cleaner and safer. We’ll be looking at use cases around Manchester in particular, and have put together a great team to examine all aspects of the problem.

We are now starting to write up our initial findings and analysis and we’ll be writing about that here in the coming weeks.

There’s a huge number of potential applications of the internet of things in an environment as varied as a city. But to give ourselves some concrete examples on which we can base our research, we have focused on three main use cases: 1) Car parking addresses the possibilities created by instrumenting parking places of various types.
